Technology removing a friction doesn't always remove the value that friction was carrying. Some of what looks like inconvenience turns out to have been part of the experience all along — and once it's gone long enough to be missed, culture starts putting it back.
The cycle doesn't end at Recover. It closes the loop back into Remove — which is why the past keeps getting mined again, one layer deeper each time.
Technology removes friction. We normalise the efficiency. The value hidden inside the friction is revealed. Culture finds a way to recover it.
Technology strips away a friction. Something becomes faster, easier, cheaper or more abundant.
The frictionless alternative becomes the default. What was once remarkable becomes ordinary.
At this point, we stop noticing what was lost.
The value hidden inside the friction becomes visible. Only once something is gone do we recognise what it was doing.
Progress doesn't necessarily reveal the value immediately. Its removal reveals it.
Culture deliberately reintroduces the lost value. Not necessarily the old technology. Not necessarily the old friction. The value.
And potentially, in the future, new forms will emerge to recover whatever AI makes scarce.
"The thing being recovered isn't the friction itself. It's what the friction made possible."
Film photography isn't a return to a technology. It's a return to anticipation, selectivity, and occasion. Nobody wants the six-week wait back. They want what the wait used to guarantee.
Tested across domains that share nothing except the mechanism itself.
| Technology removed | Became the default | What was recovered |
|---|---|---|
| Digital photography | Infinite, correctable images | Film — the decision before the outcome is known |
| Streaming | Infinite, skippable music | Vinyl — commitment to a sequence |
| E-commerce | Instant, searchable products | Vintage shopping — the treasure hunt |
| E-books | Infinite, weightless libraries | Print — one bounded object, no notifications |
| Cheap air travel | Distance collapsed to hours | Slow travel — duration as the point |
| Constant connectivity | Permanent reachability | Voluntary disconnection — a boundary, not a rejection |
| AI | Effortless creation | ? — not yet visible enough to name |
We don't go back because the old way was better. We go back when we discover that something valuable was hiding inside it.
